National Strategies and Frameworks.

The past decade has seen a significant increase in the number of European countries with national structures of support, funding and policy-making in development education. GENE was established in 2001 and brought together 6, that is most of the few then existing national structures for the support and funding of Development Education in European countries. Since 2001, there has been a rapid growth in the number of countries with national structures. There are now over 25 Ministries and Agencies involved in sharing learning through GENE, all informed by the experiences of other national structures in Europe.

Along with the growth of national structures in the past decade, there has also been an increasing recognition of the need for national strategies to increase and improve global and development education. First called for at the Maastricht Congress, there are now a growing number of countries with national strategies in the field. These national strategies ensure a coherent approach and strategic improvement and increase of provision in the field.

While there is a flourishing of national strategies at the moment, and a push for multi-stakeholder processes within the design of these national strategies; GENE is interested in the promotion of quality national strategies.
