New Ideas for Global Education Initiatives.

The purpose of the 2019 GENE Ideas Award was to offer recognition to inspiring ideas for Global Education initiatives in Europe that facilitate transformative learning. And secondly, to collect examples of innovative ideas in Global Education and disseminate learning to policymakers.

The 2019 GENE Ideas Awardees have been developing their initiatives throughout 2020 and 2021, despite the challenging times. While some activities had to go online, some were also safely organised in person.

Encouraging innovation at the “drawing board” stage with 2019 GENE Ideas Award.

Reflecting on the previous Award editions and what is already part of existing Global Education practice, the 2019 Award focused on inspiring new ideas and encouraging experimentation.

The Aim.

To offer recognition of innovative ideas for Global Education initiatives that facilitate transformative learning and open peoples’ eyes and minds to the realities of the world, locally and globally. Such ideas can create positive change through creativity, participation, direct action, synergies and innovation, with a view to inspiring public policy.

At the 2017 and 2018 Meetings of the International Selection Committee (ISC) of the Global Education Innovation Awards and the GENE Board, the participants proposed to move from recognising existing Global Education initiatives, to supporting the development of new ideas through the Global Education Ideas Award.

The Challenge.

Some of the challenging questions that Global Education practitioners and policymakers face are:

  • How do we engage people who are not easy to reach?

  • How can innovative Global Education transform attitudes of those whose values differ from those associated with Global Education such as solidarity, social justice, non-violence?

  • How do we engage in ‘political literacy’, empowering people to act in order to change national and international policies?

  • How do we strengthen Global Education practices not only at the level of the individual but also at the collective and ultimately societal levels?

GENE’s Response.

With the Global Education Ideas Award, GENE wishes to encourage experimentation, the exploration of new approaches and ways to address different issues that are pressing in today’s local and global realities, in both formal and non-formal educational settings.

GENE believes that opportunities for change through new, non-traditional and innovative approaches should be supported, applauded and recognised. GENE is aware that most Global Education funds encourage highlighting results rather than innovation, and leave little or no space for reflecting on failure. Yet, research shows that policymakers and others can learn invaluable lessons from failure, as it often results in new breakthroughs and in creative thought based on new thinking (Nedergaard, P. 2006).

“Promoting innovation in the global education sector is not a trivial matter. Such an initiative is a big step towards achieving public recognition that investing in Global Education and Global Citizenship Education is fundamental for the future of open, inclusive, peaceful, progressive societies.”
