+ Concepts and Definitions
The MFEA and SAIDC use the terms Global Education and Development Education.
SAIDC uses the Maastricht Definition:
"Global Education is an education that opens people’s eyes and minds to the realities of the world, and awakens them to bring about a world of greater justice, equity and human rights for all."
"Global Education is understood to encompass Development Education, Human Rights Education, Education for Sustainability, Education for Peace and Conflict Prevention and Intercultural Education; being the global dimensions of Education for Citizenship."
The National Strategy uses the term Global Development Education (GDE), defined as "an educational approach leading to a deeper understanding of diversity and inequality in the world. It allows us to better understand the roots and causes of such inequalities, as well as the opportunity to search for and identify possible solutions".
The National NGDO Platform Ambrela defines Global Education as follows:
"Global Education emphasizes the global context in education and increases global awareness, critical thinking and deeper understanding of the world today. Global Education creates a space for changing individual attitudes and foster the awareness of one’s role in the world. Global Education motivates people to act responsibly and in line with the values of the active global citizen."
On the civil society Global Education portal, GE is understood as "on one hand, the educational approach which stresses the global context and understanding of global themes and connections. On the other hand, it is also the way how we learn, gain and transfer our knowledge, the way how we critically analyse and reflect today´s world and our role in it".
