GENE Innovation Awards
2017 -2018.
In 2017 and 2018, GENE recognised the importance of innovation in Global Education through its Global Education Innovation Award. Applicants were encouraged to tell the story of how their initiative contributes to transformative learning and change of perceptions among their audiences and explain in what ways their approach is innovative in their contexts.
In a world of stark contrasts, opportunities to change perceptions in new, non-traditional and innovative ways need to be supported, applauded and recognised.
Purpose of GENE’s Innovation Award.
To highlight and support innovative Global Education initiatives in Europe that are either ongoing or that have been recently finalised with a clear follow-up.
To collect examples of innovative practice and disseminate learning from Global Education initiatives to policymakers throughout Europe.
The Challenge.
Some of the challenging questions that Global Education practitioners and policy makers face are:
How do we engage people who are not easy to reach?
How can innovative Global Education transform attitudes of those whose values differ from those associated with Global Education such as solidarity, social justice, non-violence?
How do we engage in ‘political literacy’, empowering people to act in order to change national and international policies?
How do we strengthen Global Education practices not only at the level of the individual but also at the collective and ultimately societal levels?
GENE’s Response.
In 2017, Members of the International Selection Committee and GENE’s Board reflected on Global Education as a form of education that involves critical pedagogy and critical thinking.
The notion of innovation was discussed in light of transformative learning that can lead to a better understanding of the shifting power relations, the key challenges related to sustainability, local empowerment for global impact and the global initiatives with local impact.
It was also highlighted that innovation is only created through the ability to take a risk and to have the freedom to experiment.
